Time will tell if global warming is real, if our green efforts have a visible and substantial effect.

zhenggggg The sad part is that according to some scientists, it may already be too late. Still, the environment is such a complex issue, and nature being so enduring, that I feel it is never too late to do anything. Like chaos theory, I believe that even a small step may have long-lasting and significant impact in nature.

attsayang Well, I think the only way that the environment can be saved is simply by being responsible. We love the Earth, and we will have to talk less but put more into action regardless of the scientists' predictions.

firstbornunicorn I suppose no one can really tell what will really happen in the future, despite dire predictions such as in xxx years, global warming will cause climate change which causes rise of global temperature which causes the polar ice caps to melt that will in turn cause flooding and maybe a MAJOR APOCALYPSE.

Well, nobody will know until it comes, right?

There is also the theory that explains that global warming and climate change is simply the Earth's own protective mechanism against the ills of human activity. And this is part of a huge natural cycle of the planet's renewal of resources. Just like how centuries ago, dinosaurs that populated the Earth were wiped out and the planet underwent a period of Ice Age. Everything seemed to start anew. A fresh slate.

Who knows, history may just repeat itself, maybe not in the near future, but definitely someday. The humans will be wiped out by the consequences of their own activity, and everything will start afresh. It is a point of contention whether our efforts towards conservation now will "reverse" this cycle and prevent this apocalypse from happening. Maybe we will only prolong it, but the end is inevitable. It is only a matter of time.

As long as we continue to rob Mother Nature of resources faster than the rate at which she can replenish them, we will be working towards this great purge when our planet home decides that it no longer can afford to house us, and brings upon great floods and winds of destruction.

sharizann I think we should make the Green March a tradition for SP where the whole event is empowered by youths from the planning part right up to the execution part. Not only did we have fun, we also get to learn about saving the environment through visuals and hands on.

I am sure our juniors will be delighted to carry on this tradition that we have started.

waltzingmathile Yes it was a lot of fun. I think our whole cohort has learnt very much through the whole process. It was really fulfilling watching all our efforts being put in action yesterday. Our participants looked like they were having a good time too!

We have all gained a lot during the course of this project. And most of us are a lot more green than we were at the beginning of the year. B

But now what is most important is to start practicing what we have been preaching, yes? GO GREEN!!

I'm very sure the participants learnt alot from the organizers. Everything went smoothly but most importantly, I personally feel that there's hope for our future. If we can change one person at a time and in turn that person changes one more person. We'll be able to save our world.

He was from Japan and he wrote a comment at our green booths saying he wish that we will all continue to do our best to make the earth a better place for all to live in :) I guess we all did kind of spread the message out! Hooray! :D

jumpyqueen Yes! I have lot's of fun during the green march. The event went smoothly and i think that our participants will know more about the enviromental issues and the tips to go green.

attsayang Yes! I certainly had a lot of fun. My group did the make-up for Lady Gaias. It was so much fun! I've never make-up for people before. That was my first time.

dtyw I'm sure we all had fun, but at the end of the day I'm sure all of us took back home valuable knowledge on going green. Let's all work towards sustainable future and a greener Singapore!

sharizann E-books gives us convenience, bargain and an alternative way in helping save Gaia. As long as technology lives, we can read them over and over without having to worry about yellowed papers or torn off pages.

Imagine that thick Harry Potter book of yours is fitted inside these latest technological advancement called PC tablets. iPads, Kindle, Asus, etc etc. Technology not only brings convenience to us but also benefit Mother Earth.

waltzingmathile Yes I highly recommend ebooks! I own one myself and it has saved me from having to buy so many books.

Just imagine, if everyone in the reading world were to own an ebook each, we would save so much paper and so many trees!

Having said that, nothing beats reading your favourite novel page to page, physically: Slowly savouring each chapter and each paragraph on those gradually yellowing pages.

It would be wonderful if some tech-genius out there could invent something to recreate that experience out of an ebook. With that in place, I'm sure the traditional masses will start switching to kindles/ipads.

iamnotme I believe in the future, everyone would own an e-book and actually r'ead from it! The libraries will no longer have hardcopies and would be actually filled with databases for us to download the 'ebooks' from the databases instead. Imagine the number of papers saved? But charging an e-book on a regular basis would be pretty energy-wasting too, no? :)

I guess there's always two sides to something, just like a page in a book.

jumpyqueen Imagine a future where you do not have to carry your heavy textbooks to school. All you need to bring to school is one flat and stylish Ebook. I agreed that whoever invented ebook is a genius. However, it's still not a very recognised way of reading book. Nowadays, most people are still buying books. The schools are all using textbooks. It took time for people to adjust to new technology. Who knows, maybe a few years down the road. E book will replace "paper-book".

ginachiam I agree with the fact that Ebook is much more environmental friendly than "paper-book", but if the materials used are raw resources, and if they consume more energy... Are they then, really environmental friendly?

camellialimxinyi I agree that the ebook is more environmentally-friendly as compared to the traditional book. And i also feel that it'll be great if we could replace the school textbooks with the ipad. This will also help lessen the burden placed on the shoulders of our poor students. However, Gina also has a point there. Perhaps now we can only hope that the IT geniuses will come up with new technology that is made using recyclable materials such as the plastic from old computers etc.

victortky The e-book can help cut down the use of paper to print books. However, it will take time to adjust as there will be large numbers of people who still read paper books. Moreover., e-books need electricity, and hence may consume more resources, so they cannot be considered fully environmentally friendly.

Consumer electronics are notorious for containing a variety of toxic materials. Some companies are more transparent than others and make it relatively clear that their e-reader devices are free of toxic materials like PVC (Sony and Apple) and BFRs and mercury (Apple). But as Casey Harrell, an international campaign coordinator for Greenpeace, which monitors the environmental impact of consumer electronics, told the New York Times, e-readers remain something of an unknown variable.

Also, electronic waste is becoming a growing environmental problem, and even though companies like Apple and Amazon have recycling programs in place, there’s a good chance e-readers will contribute to the electronic waste stream.

wilsongreenie that's a really interesting idea! although considering that it is shoe cream its not quite as appetizing. However if it's marketed as a lip balm it might work better.

Anyways, what else in the market are similar? Maybe there are some cool products with multiple uses already out there! Let's save the environment by using such products to suit our different needs.

victortky An interesting product, that's for sure. I just hope that there won't be any dangerous substances used in the "edible shoe cream" as it would seriously damage your health if used. And there's the problem of putting it near your other shoe cream...unless it has something to differentiate itself from the rest. Anyway, what's next? Edible soap and shampoo?

sptammy I agree that a lot of people, especially the less educated ones, are pretty much apathetic about caring for the environment. They would much rather save their effort and money than to walk that extra mile to do a small step for the environment. However, we shouldn't give up! Let's convert this pessimism and frustration into working even harder to revise and improve the way we promote the green movement! I am positive that hard work and patience and time will pay off. Don't ever lose hope!

keshias Singapore is one of the countries that have the most campaigns. The companies really have to work hard to make their campaigns stand out amongst the clutter. This is true, especially for environmental efforts. Like what sptammy says, a lot of people are apathetic and would rather do things the convenient way. As youths, we do have the capability to change the environmental health standard by influencing people around us to take a stand.
