jade To label the music green does not seem to serve any "green" purpose. But I guess it is more about raising awareness, and that is always a good initiative, especially for a huge organisation like Warner Music.

As they say, music is a universal language that reaches out to everyone!

khairul03 To me Green music can be of any genre or whatsoever. The message is not for us to reduce, reuse or recycle. But the message is for us to realise the state of the Earth now. And it's up to us to do what's right. We all know the necessary steps to save the Earth, but it's just a matter of how willing we are in saving the Earth.

fionaseah my first impression about songs smacked with the label GREEN is CHEESY!! but maybe that only applies to local-made green songs.. I'm not sure if anyone remembers that 3Rs song recorded by NEA to discourage littering? Oh my god those were the corniest thing EVER!!

but yup, in order to make songs more impactful to its listeners they should come across as GOOD as songs we hear on the radio.. I mean, whoever listens to trash music??

anlesytx I believe Green music could be of any genre and it is like a win-win situation (to me that is). First, it is something new and original, like a masterpiece. Second, it works like a form of advertising as it collaborates with hot singers like Katy Perry and many more. Third, people pay for the albums and the profits may most probably go to charities and sorts. Lastly, some people may enjoy the music and then for all you know, everyone starts singing the songs and then the songs will bound to serve as a reminder for everyone to do their job in saving the planet.

waltzingmathile I guess there are two sides to this.

These albums are a great way to raise awareness about the green movement because people would actually pay attention to these musicians/artiste and the green things that they have to say.
But, oh my god, isn't it corny! We have all heard the green cheers during the green march yesterday, and I personally thought it was too corny to contain. And looking around me I saw similar expressions.
Doesn't it sound like a gimmick to you: these corporate giants are making use of the current "in" thing, just to make money. Oh it's all too familiar.
Oh well, but maybe I shouldn't be too cynical.

thelion Indeed, by going green, I have lost a bit of weight myself.

I tried having a fiber diet—a diet with higher fiber content. Fiber makes you feel fuller longer, so you won't actually cut down on the amount of food you consume. Do note that recommended daily fiber intake is 25g[or some might say 18g]/

Unfortunately, many believe that by having a diet with much higher content of dietary fiber, you loose out on the taste of your food. I beg to differ. Try consuming wholemeal bread with butter/peanut. There is so much more taste to it than plain boring white bread. Perhaps it might take a while for some to adjust to the sudden difference in taste[but isn't it normal when we try something different from what we usually eat?], we just have to believe that it is worth it.

If you tend to have constipation, here is another important reason why you should start consuming more fiber in your meals. Dietary fiber holds water, which makes excrement looser and easier to release.


Fiber is good for your heart and soul--A diet rich in fiber helps prevent heart problems.

Here are some examples on what you can start eating today because they might just be your type of food!
1. Potatoes, remember to leave the skin on because a lot of the nutrients and fiber are actually present there!

2. PASTA LOVER? Make the switch now! Wholegrain pasta is definitely the healthier choice. The difference in taste is not noticeable, plus you feel full much faster…which means you will not overeat!

3. Go NUTS with…well, nuts! Because Mixed fruit, nuts and/or seeds are often available in snack-sized bags.

Now that you have learnt so much, isn't it time to do something about your diet?

jittelicious Haha cmo and thelion are definitely know their stuff. Many people have the misconception that eating healthy means no carbs and no fat, or that it is a diet full of supplements. Simply eating a balanced diet of whole, natural foods, while avoiding processed food is the way to go. Avoiding processed food means less pesticide, less preservatives, and less chemicals in our body. Not only will it benefit your body, it will benefit the environment as well!

I think staying trim and fit is not only a responsibility we have for our own bodies, but also to the environment and our community.

wahidah No, I don't believe there's a need to get more plastic bags, I suppose some people are just... kiasu. Plastic bags are free at NTUC, so they figure why not take more for that very reason.

Perhaps NTUC and the other billion other corporations out there should start charging for their plastic bags, $0.10 each.

xinderalla I guess Singaporean's awareness of going green is not strong enough or some people might just be apathetic about the whole green cause. From my observation, carrying a green tote bag is a fashionable trend amongst many youths and many of them are refusing the use of plastic bag when shopping. Maybe the older generations are not as exposed to the message of going green and we can play the role of explaining to our parents or grandparents the importance of it.

nad yeah i think ntuc should adopt greener methods like selling recyclable bags or charging the public more than ten cents per plastic bag they require since paying a few cents extra in stores like ikea do not make much of a difference to the publics purses. if the bags are charged at a higher price, only then will people start to take notice and realize they that it is more cost-efficient to bring their own shopping bag!

pizzamizza SInce it's free, why not? Just like how we print our stuffs in Studio 19. This does not only happen to people around us but I do believe it happens and IS STILL happening in the whole of Singapore.

Problem? They do not know how these will affect them.

Solution? They need more public education and show them how this green thing is related to them.

chenxwdawn I agree with the suggestion to start charging people for plastic bags. This will make consumers more conscious of the number of plastic bags they're taking/using. Actually, Singapore should look into replacing plastic bags with paper bags when possible. True that they cost more but if it's just a few cents, maybe the corporations can look into absorbing these costs for the sake of the environment.

dtyw Perhaps a system could be introduced whereby consumers could be a given a few cents off their total bill if they brought their own bags to carrying their marketing from the supermarket.

Singaporeans tend to be suckers for bargains, so perhaps NTUC or other major corporations could come up with a scheme such as this, emphasising the money saved from bringing your own shopping bags and of course, the benefits that it would have on our environment.

michelleang i think ikea is one organisation that has really made it a point to charge for extra consumption of plastic bags or any for that matter. And im not sure, but i actually think its a perfect deterrence. I know i for one make it a point not to ask for the plastic bags at ikea can i help it.

denzelljy They might start young, but it's more of a habit of throwing things into a bin. Paper that doesn't go into the right bin ends up not recycled. Hopefully, schools are teaching them the rationale behind that action. When I was younger there were curbs surrounding the mailbox at void decks to toss your junk mail conveniently. But I think that was to prevent paper from flying around.

xinderalla I believe going green should be a lifestyle and what better way to cultivate it from a young age? Kids in other countries like japan are trained to separate their waste and they even have a rooster duty in the neighborhood and everyone play a part in ensuring that all the waste are being sort out and recycled accordingly. It would be wonderful if the kindergarten start promoting such activities.

Many people might not know this, but up to 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream! Hence wouldn't it be a smarter choice to get make-up that is made up of natural ingredients rather than chemically processed ones?

In fact, paraben and phalates are chemicals that are found in most make-up items. They help prevent microbial growth, and are used to protect consumers. However, lately scientists have linked these chemicals to cancer! I think it is a relief that many organisations now are trying to remove these chemicals from their products.

xinderalla Absolutely true! I tend to look out for natural products when it come to cosmetics. Products from Bodyshop are not only natural, they also minimize their packaging to play their part for the environment. If not, we can also use natural fruits and vegetable to make face mask. They not only smell yummy, they make your skin look yummy too! :D

pizzamizza The word green cosmetics will not only beautify your faces but it makes those who are wearing it feel good too. Why feel good? Because you know you are beautiful and is helping to save the earth at the same time.

nad this is absolutely true! you don't have to wait very long to see the negative effects of cosmetics on your skin. in a few months or years u can see how harmful those things u put on your face are. there are some brands that have started using natural products such as Skin Food and Body Shop and i strongly encourage people to opt for safer greener products!

cmo So what should you look for in a beauty product to show it’s environmentally friendly?

There are a number of things to keep an eye out for. First and foremost, that the product is not animal tested. Animals are, after all, an important part of our environment!

Other points to look out for: -

Even products that are labelled as not having been tested on animals might contain animals. Believe it or not, slaughterhouse by-products are often included in cosmetics. Look on the ingredients. If your intended purchase contains gelatine, collagen, or animal based emulsifiers, you’d be smearing yourself in dead animals. Yuk. Also look out for an ingredient called Spermataceti Cetaceum. This is a latin description of a product that comes from sperm whales. Seriously unfriendly to our environment!

Avoid products containing petroleum by-products. These come from unsustainable sources, and are therefore not good for the environment. Ingredients to avoid include: Paraffin oil (or Mineral Oil), Propylene Glycol and Ethylene. Interestingly, many of these products block pores or stop skin from functioning properly by creating a barrier on the surface of the skin. Products containing coconut butter will do exactly the same job and will look after you and the environment.

Make sure that your products’ ingredients don’t pollute the environment whilst they are being manufactured. A number of common ingredients are guilty of this.

Make sure that the packaging your cosmetics come in are recyclable and don’t contribute to landfill. Make sure the containers your products come in state that they are recyclable. Avoid PVC containers as they are the most environmentally damaging. Greenpeace recommends using glass containers if possible.

The concept of flat-pack self-assembled furniture helps to maximize transportation and makes transporting the products much more efficient.

Their stores are fitted with toilets with dual-function flushers and their restaurants only offer reusable plates and cutlery. The store also doesn't provide plastic bags to their customers, but instead, offer reusable bags for sale.

The amount of going green and being environmentally friendly, despite being a retailer with a contradicting cause, just goes to show that IKEA is more than just a store. Are there any other stores as green as them?

denzelljy I wonder if their foods go through green processes too, because many people love their meatballs and hotdogs. So it would be an even better move for IKEA to educate us on their food too. It would be a greener, more wholesome experience. Don't you think?

xinderalla Yes, their restaurant send their food waste to farms as fertilizer. It is heartening to see them playing their part in all area to save the environment. :)

annabellaftw IKEA is a store which has constantly proved itself to be consumer-friendly, employee-friendly and now, environmentally-friendly. What is it that IKEA can't do?! As a furniture store, they contribute to the destruction of the environment. However, what makes IKEA different is that they choose and make a conscious effort to give back to the environment. As seen above, IKEA has tried to implement environmentally friendly actions in all areas of their services. Indeed, it is extremely commendable of IKEA to provide such services.

camellialimxinyi I am actually a big fan of IKEA too...as much as I love their meatballs, I also love the fact that they do recognize and will put in the effort to maintain their corporate social responsibility and also do their part to save the Earth. Most companies are not ready to go green due to higher overhead costs but IKEA, who proves that the are beyond selfish monetary gains, deserves our respect and support. One suggestion from me would be that it'll be even better if they can produce their furnitures from recycled materials (apart from their models) or only use wood of trees from sustainable forests.
