ruskinong Yes. That would be a great idea to have people really know what is going around the world. What i feel is that the reason why many people living in Singapore are apathetic to the environment is because they do not see the urgency or rather suffer the consequences. It is just like the 'frog theory'. When the frog is left in room temperature water and heated till a high temperature, it will just stay there as it feels no need to react. But when it is placed in boiling water, it will jump out straight away. People need to see the effect before they react.

laura It's a nice idea, but what will it do? Convince a few people to start using less paper. Which is also a nice, if not token, step in the grand scheme of things, but global warming involves a far larger scope of damaging affronts beyond the problem of deforestation. Educating the public on using less aerosol cans, less electricity and fuel, less wastage and overall consumption is a daunting task that generations of activists and Al Gores have failed to achieve. But perhaps that's exactly why we can only move forward in small steps. Saving a bit of paper, switching off the lights, little things.

wilsongreenie Demands lead to inventions. It is inevitable that such things will be created. Plastics were created because people needed the material for various reasons. Pollution is a result of these demands. Lifestyles shape these demands. We all will require something some time in life that is created with a side effect on nature and when a large number of us need that thing, someone will come up with it. So we need to educate those who will be entering the age to demand such things. Maybe they will understand how some things they need scar the Earth we live on. Maybe one day demands for such things will drop. In my opinion, only then we can fight for a greener home.

ruskinong For everyone to go green is possible over a really long period of time, it is hard to persuade people to give up their lifestyles as it is already a habit for them. Like asking those who sleep in air-conditioned rooms at night to totally switch off. Humans are greedy beings. We hunger for better lifestyles and higher quality of goods. Like what wilsongreenie said, demands lead to inventions. Back then, people do not realise the importance of the environment. But with the real fact that what we are doing directly implicates our future generations, people are starting to think. So i would say, be persuasive. Do not give up hope. Like asking people to replace air-cons with fans. Change has to take time. It cannot happen overnight.

ruskinong I think the upgrades and products are eco-friendly and sort of only involves them as a company. Little is really related to the consumers out there. It is like i go to NTUC, get a biodegradable plastic bag. For a conventional Singaporean, the question is \'So what?\' As long as i have a bag to carry my stuff, i am satisfied. There is no direct relation between the environmental message and the consumers. In fact, i think that large corporations like NTUC should go on to support or even create really \'green campaigns and activities\' to promote these messages to the people. Also, to constantly advocate the environmental messages in their daily services. In this way, then there is a possibility that people might take a look and try to understand.

fionaaaa First of all, City Square Mall is not doing a good job as an eco mall. With the air conditiong at full blast throughout the opening hours, usage of lights even with the existence of skylight ceiling, escalators and elevators always in use, this is not eco friendly! Giving biodegradable bags is a good start but what makes you think customers care whether they are biodegradable or not. Are customers restricted to the number of bags they want. How are you going to make them more environmentally aware. Even of they are aware, what makes you think they can be bothered to help save the Earth

ruskinong I think that it is possible. Because going green is a trend that has been undoubtedly globalized. For those who wouldn't do so, i would just say that they need to take more effort into really understanding why people are going green. Why humans from all around the world are going on this trend. This is a matter of supporting what you believe is correct and should be done.

bluepeasoup I think for that to happen, being green can't be a trend. It has to be a LIFESTYLE. It has to be something that you do out of habit. Or maybe its just being socially aware and socially responsible. And I think people will pay more for things that are environmentally friendly. Triumph, Wacoal and Mark's and Spencers' lingerie line, Per Una all sell environmentally friendly bras :) Their bras are all made of organic cotton that doesn't use up as much energy when they are produced. :D Cool eh? ahahaha.

dragos The problem with environmental damage is that its effects are not immediately noticeable, not in an obvious way anyway. Because of this it is very difficult to get most people to change their lifestyle (or spend more on certain products) because of the environment. And if we wait until the effects do become obvious, it's going too be already too late. So in the meantime, people in the business of being "green" carry the responsibility of finding other ways to convince the majority to join them. Environmentally friendly food and bodycare product makers do this by playing the health card. "It's better for your health so you should consume it. Oh and by the way, it's better for the environment as well". Clothing brands don't have this luxury - we don't ingest our clothes neither through our skin nor through our mouths. For now, the only real choice for green fashion labels it to fight the "conventional" competition with their own weapons. Price is out of the question since it's more expensive to produce environmentally friendly clothing. We're left with quality and style. So in my opinion the answer to the question would be: No, people will not pay more for eco fashionwear. But they will pay more for good quality stylish clothing that happens to be environmentally friendly as well. Dragos, Etrican

keshias I guess the best way (but the hardest way) is to change their beliefs by offering proof that there will be mutual benefits. And as @dragos says, value for money is out of the question so we have to appeal to their fashion sense in the perception that it is the \'in\' thing now.

xyrhs Well, I guess the answer would still depends on the design of the product itself. No doubt people may be more than willing to pay more for something that is environmental friendly. However, if the product isn\'t visually appealing, then people might tend to waiver as to whether or not should they buy. In the case of a NIKE\'s product, the sole of Nike\'s (NKE) new Air Jordan is made with ground-up bits of old Nike sneakers, NIKE choose to play down sustainability initiatives. Nike customers buy shoes to make them feel fast, slick, and hip; they don\'t care much about being eco-chic. "Nike has always been about winning. The brand\'s eco-friendly products are cheaper to make, but its buyers are more interested in design and performance than sustainability," said brand consultant, Dean Crutchfield. Thus at the end of the day, I guess it still very much depends on the product design and target audience that matters most.

codenamebutter I have to agree with xyrhs. I think people would be willing to pay more for fashion wear that is stylish (based on design of the product) and comes from a well-known brand. Tags on product, which states "eco-friendly" or "organic" will only come in as a surplus if they were to purchase the item. However, there are brands that embrace both the elements of being eco-friendly and fashionable in their products and yet, possess a large consumer base. Brands such as STELLA MCCARTNEY and Levi jeans who added an all-organic line of denim to their collection.

Photos taken with the cosplay who were generating abt NEA's Operation MACE were immediately posted up on Clean & Green Singapore facebook site. Well, I had fun. I hope you do too.

ruskinong My personal favourite was the green band competition. The participants really made it clear that music can be made out of stuff that we have defined as useless in our daily lifestyle. Two thumbs up for all teams!

shyonshii The green band competition was actually the most fun segment I ever had. It's quite amusing to see the bands go up there to perform with enthusiasm to spread the message of saving the earth. I'm also glad that Channel 5 have covered our Earth Day! It was exciting to see a lot of various medias taking interest in our campaign!

rick the event was such a bore, i\'m thinking of ways of how to kill myself in my head. MACE by NEA was about some mozzies, which is unrelated to being environmentally conscious. i lol\'d at the ridicule sight of them in costume. what are they supposed to be, some mozzie fighters or something? if you wanna cosplay, go suntec. the Green Band cheated my feelings. i was expecting some music with singings, but we got mindless stomping, hoofing and shouting of the participants. this ain\'t what a band\'s supposed to be. the Green Band disappoint me so much and i left early cause the noise is just too unbearable, it\'s like telling me to get the fish out. xyrhs My personal favourite about SP Go Green, is the fashion show. I didn\'t know that there are things like eco-fashion and eco-friendly tee shirts etc. Also, seeing some students dressed up in green with green apples in their hands feels awesome. It\'s heartwarming to see that our generation is willing to do something to show our support, even if it meant to wear a green t-shirt, to show our support. I feel that more of such events should be held to not only educate students about going green, but also to remind them that being environmentally friendly should not be just a one day thing, but rather a daily thing, so that we could save our environment!

shaunmaniax I feel that the event itself was not fun and what was worse, I felt that the message of the event wasn't really brought across. There were a lot of things going on which really didn't show what SP was going green. Even the lights out wasn't really a lights out. The only good part of it was the car free day. It was nice to have a little fresh air, even though there were some cars there because of the event or because they were supplies for the stores in SP, if there was anything that SP should continue from that event would be the car free day, other than that, don't waste resources saying that we are going green. Because it really doesn't show.

keshias Everyday is Earth Day! As long as you are living on Earth, you are responsible for it! As the future generation, we would want a clean & green place to live in. And we can't possibly let the cleaners clean up behind us just cos they were paid. Many people have this wrong thinking. And it's so tough to CHANGE people's attitudes/beliefs/behaviours.
