In my Daily life, I would do my best to throw the rubbish to the bin and as far as possible, i would discard it according to the different section (Metal, Plastic & Paper). I have always been trying to reduce, reuse and recycle different materials in our daily life. Some of the examples are separating paper, cans and plastics and put them into the recycle bin, reusing used paper as draft paper, reduce the use of plastic bags when i go to convenient stores or supermarkets. In my opinion, i believe that the media are able to influence the youth as youths are easily influence by the media nowadays. I have in mind that we should always go Green and should Reuse, Reduce and Recycle for the sake the planet and most importantly, ourselves. However, this applies only to a certain extent. When I saw the advertisement, be in on the television, brochure, etc. I am very determined on going green but after a few days, I had totally forgotten about it. Thus, I felt that the need to influence the youths, or even the adults, should be a never ending thing and in order to achieve this, there should be more publicity.

jaycng Honestly speaking, we can assume that the majority of youths, including me, in Singapore are somewhat unconcerned when it comes to going green. Hence, i belong to the neutrals. Throughout the years, many campaigns and contests were held to encourage youths to be more environmentally-friendly. These contests usually involves attractive prizes to be won. However, contestants are more attracted to the prizes and non-participants are more concerned about the outcomes of the contests. A good example is the Eco Music Challenge 2010 that was held recently. Therefore, I conclude that the media hardly influence the youths to be more environmentally-friendly.

peilian Personally, I think I fall under the supporter category and I would like to attribute this to the good family culture I grew up in. My family has good environmental friendly habits and I am definitely a supporters of it. We recycle and reuse as much as we can. For instance, we use the used papers as rough papers and decline plastic bags from shops if we do not need them. Although these are just little things, I believe if everyone does the same thing, it would have a good impact on the world. I think the media influence on the youth to be more environmentally friendly is very little. Today's youth may get to know the threats the world is facing through media. Despite this, action taken by youth to help save the world is very little. Youths are not doing much although they have the knowledge of how they can play a part to help save the world. Hence, I think the media influence is not very effective.

deryoh We may not live to see the end of days, however, the world is where we live in and I honestly believe in preserving it for out future generations. Hence, I'm definitely a supporter. We've generated so much green house gases that there's already a big hole in our ozone layer which protects us from the harmful rays. And if this generation of green house gases carries on, we wouldn't have a ozone layer anymore. I've seen many countries that has stepped up the effort to help save our world. Such as setting days which plastic bags are not given out in shopping markets, or not given out at all! Gases that are discharged from factories have to meet certain standards of cleaniness set by the country. We've also have to got to play our part. Even the smallest acts like reusing of water bottles and recycling of materials, like newspapers, helps. If everyone does this small acts, it'll add up. Lastly, in my opinion, media has not been of much help in influencing youth to be more environmentally friendly. There are plently of documentaries which states how being environmentally friendly would not affect our daily lives, and lenghten the lifespan of planet earth. But, honestly speaking, I've not seen much change in the youths today. Enough said, if we all want to breathe cleaner air, we've just got to play our part as individuals.

But, Going Green requires a collective effort from both the public and the corporate world in order to be effective. People tend to preach more than they practise. And I'm no exception. Unless more people take actions in going green, it is not going to have enough of an impact on our environment. In general, i, if not in depth, am aware of global warming and the damaging effect it can bring to Earth. But i know that i have not done enough in my efforts to go green and keep global warming to a minimum. This is apparent even when i am carrying out the simplest of tasks in my everyday life - i hardly recycle my empty plastic bottles, reduce the usage of paper or reuse my plastic bags. At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. It takes more out of me than to just acknowledge the problem of global warming in order to become proactive in becoming a more environmentally-friendly individual. Moving on, i think that the media plays an important role in influencing today's youth to be more environmentally friendly. Various media outlets such as the television and internet can be utilised so as to spread the message of global warming, and show its detrimental effect on the earth. This will then subsequently encourage youths to lead a pro-green lifestyle. The effect may not be immediate but the media is instrumental in increasing awareness about global warming among youths.

I do not believe that the media is an efficient way to influence today’s youth to be more environmentally friendly. There are many TV shows, newspapers and advertisements which educate people to go green. But, most of youth just accept those theories rather than taking actions to be environmentally friendly. In my opinion, organizing an environmental group in school is very important, using actions to promote the enthusiasm of youth to go green.

nicky Seriously? I am a hardcore supporter. I always bring a bag or recycling bag when I'm out. Hence, I hardly ever uses plastic bags. In the past, the air conditioning unit in my room was on almost everyday, but for the past few years, the air conditioning unit was on hardly more than a total of two months a year. Why? I was influenced by a brochure that was in my mail a few years ago. I remembered the brochure containing many information on the global warming issue and the threats it bring. Every sentence I read sent fear down my spine. Imagine when all our coral reefs were gone, the now endangered species becoming extinct and the frequent occurring extreme weathers. All this can hit us even before we die. So, it left me feeling that I should do something now than to regret it when the global warming issues affect us. Because then, I can tell myself that I have played my part. This thing about media influencing youth to be more environmentally friendly might work, but it will only be a temporary solution. You can broadcast going green messages everyday and it could get into people's head, reminding them to be environmentally friendly. However, once the media stop publicizing, people will eventually forget about it as they don't sense the urgency or need to be green anymore when this little message or reminder stops.

The concerts brought together more than 150 musical acts in eleven locations around the world which were broadcast to a mass global audience through televisions, radio, and streamed via the Internet. Furthermore, social networks such as facebook, twitter, youtube could be used as a platform to send the message to the youths. Therefore, as individuals, a nation and international society, we should work together to save our dying planet.

zhiqi Personally, I believe in Going Green to save the Mother Earth thus I am a supporter. Well, I’ve been a rather enthusiastic supporter of Going Green, probably due to the influence of my family, and friends. Since young, my Mother uses a big recycling bag every time she visits the market. I’ve been influenced to not get a carrier every time I buy something if my bag has enough room to put the items in. I am grateful also that my friends surrounding me are Go Green supporters too. We usually bring reusable fork and spoon, chopsticks, mugs whenever we have a picnic or whenever we have a party. It is already a rule for everyone to bring reusable utensils every time we gather! In my opinion, I do not feel that the Media has a large capability to influence today’s youth. The use of media to convey the Go Green message has been going on for probably close to a decade. I guess other than using the media to educate today’s youth on Going Green, why not let them have some hands on experience? I’ve been to a programme called “Balik Kampong” that is held at Bottle Tree Park on every Sunday morning. The main aim of the programme is to let youths, or rather the public to come together and work for the environment. The organization needs help in things like planting of vegetable, painting on used tiles that are recycled to decorate the green houses, building of a bridge, etc. I feel that this is great opportunity for youths to get influenced because they get to feel and have substantial understanding and empathy towards the environment. I believe it is not difficult to Go Green because every little thing you do, a little action you do, can stir up a chain effect. In other words, if you are a supporter of going green, you can try to influence people around you and thus it will spread out and influence more people. Little actions like not using a carrier while buying small items, bringing your own utensils for parties, fully utilizing both sides of a piece of paper can help to cut down on the use of resources thus saving the Earth. They are so simple, so why not?

In the modern cultural we are living in, Going Green is the hottest topic which everyone around us would pledge them to Green. However, I'm not part of the trend. I'm a person who prefers conveniences rather than making an effort, like going to those supermarkets, I rather paying 10cents for each plastic bag which I need than bringing my grocery bag from my house. If I got a car, I would drive than taking public transport. I believe the Media plays an important role influencing the Youths of today. liwen I am definitely a supporter. A clean environment makes people feels happier. There would not be anyone who would want to live in a dirty and unhygienic place. Since young, I have been playing my part in going green by abiding with the 3Rs. I have always used recycled paper to makes my notes for studying. In addition, I always try my best to print on both sides of the paper whenever I could. These are just one of the few "green" habits that I have kept up till today. It is indeed true that the media plays a part in influencing the youths today to be more environmentally friendly, however, I believe that it is only to a certain extent. Youths today are in touch with media everyday. The media can be a powerful tool to educate the youths if it is used appropriately. Through the media, we can raise the youth’s awareness on environmental issues. For instance, there are contests which require youths to use recycled materials to produce an artefact or other useful items. By working on the contests, it reminds them that some materials are reusable. However, the use of media to influence youth can also be a double-edged sword. The “Live Earth” concert seeks to spread the important message of going green but the occurrences of these concerts have exhausted large amount of electrical power which in turn have an adverse effect on our ozone layer. Thus, the media should be used appropriately without creating a negative impact on the earth. Through simple actions like throwing our litter into a rubbish bin, we can together make a difference to the Earth. wenglenda The topic "Going Green" has been around Singapore for years and I have always been neutral about it. As much as I may like to be more environmental friendly, its has never been my habit to be "more green" like bringing my own bags when doing grocery shopping or making a little more effort to be more environmental friendly. But there are still times where I try using recycled papers for exam notes or throw my rubbish into the correct bins (glass, paper, plastic). There are times I do things that are considered environmental friendly and those actions came from the media efforts. I read magazines that have columns on teaching us how to make use of items that are recyclable, or notes on how to make the earth greener. There are newspapers where there is a section of it talking about the 3Rs occasionally or discussing about how to make the earth greener. Hence, I feel that the Media will be able to change to youth to be more environmentally friendly. And that, is only provided if the youths do look into those media (videos, magazines) that are promoting the "Going Green" campaign.

If not, I will just throw them into the nearest rubbish bin. I will keep a stack of papers at home with the intention of reusing them; however, I will end up using new sets of papers. I am definitely aware of the degradation of the earth and the effects it has on my daily life. Unfortunately, people tend to be all talk no action, and I am no exception. The media can be used to influence today’s youth if the right methods are used. victortky Since most people nowadays do not pay attention to the green messages, the only way to put it across is through media such as movies and television broadcasts. It can even be simple reality TV shows, or documentary shows such as national geographic and the Okto nature shows. The movies such as 2012 and WallE bring across the deep message of what happens when mother nature decides to take action on what the humans have done and eventual waste that consumes the Earth completely respectively.

notsosunnily I definitely think that Twitter is a exceptionally smart method of reaching out to the masses. Almost everyone, youths and adults alike, are on Twitter. Twitter gets messages out and across in short amounts of time, what with trending topics and mentions. It's almost too easy to get a message rolling on Twitter, and sending out a green message on a social networking site like Twitter is a quick and effective way of raising awareness in the society. Also, with everyone using Twitter on the go now, there are ways to get interactivity by having them take a picture, or tweet about how they've started going green!

I feel it will be great if Twitter can create its own official profile for environmental issues where supporters of the green movement can follow the profile and share tweets about the environment. collinwang Hi Sharon. I think that this particular angle is more effective than say, reiterating the 3Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle message to people. Making Mother Earth like a real person would appeal to people's emotions, and I think we can't really compare this approach to not personifying the environment as they cater to different objectives. Well, maybe this is out of a desperate attempt to alert human beings that Earth is in real danger and we should do something now. Using Gaia as a subject in the Green Campaign would not only appeal to people, but it would also draw attention to people. Just like any superheroes that we have seen on television when we were young like superman, spiderman, powerpuff girls, the underdogs, etc, we will definitely remember Lady Gaia if it is branded this way. I would say it's not a shame to portray Earth in this manner because most people are responsive to emotions rather than adopting other practical strategies. Then again, when using Gaia, the messaging should not be subtle, as we won't want people to bring nothing back after the entire campaign. yinqing I really love Mediacorp's Saving Gaia campaign this year. I can really relate myself to their campaign. It gives me the feeling that they are 'chiding' us on behalf of Gaia. To your question if it is a shame, well, I guess it depends. A shame because I myself am one of them. It's only because of this campaign that I really felt Gaia is my 'parent'. I don't want to kill my own parent. Hence, it is a yes and a no. A NO because if this campaign can motivate us to do something to save our 'parent', why not? :))

reeohnah I think it is quite effective as people can resonate with the campaign. Though the idea of "saving Gaia is equivalent to saving ourselves" is rather self-centered, yet it reminds people that nature has its own "life". In addition, by personifying the nature elements, the facts will hit the audience harder and touch the emotional aspect of them too. Overall, rather than being ashamed of it, i loved this new idea of promoting "saving gaia" efforts as it does not goes the normal, old fashion methods of repeating the 3Rs.

pfang I think the campaign is effective as it appeals to our emotions. By personifying it, people are reminded to treat the environment equally as a living thing deserves. In this era where we are mostly desensitized, other methods like the presentation of facts may not get as much response than this tactic. I don't think it is a shame to use this tactic. If this tactic helps to spread the "saving gaia" message to more people, why not?

bluefairy The ad was rather disturbing but I think the message was put across very strongly. Whatever that we are doing to our earth that is damaging is going to affect us and the future generation. sharizann If you have seen last year's advertisement (http://goo.gl/bZ3d), the director has decided on a softer approach to put forth the message. Comparing the two advertisements, the earlier campaign has none the less given the viewers a more stronger message that immediate action has to be done for the environment although it might be seen as disturbing to some. For me, I find that the message they are trying to convey outweighs the effect of the visuals that people might find as disturbing.

hellodufis Oh yes! Out of all three adverts, the latest one would be my favourite, followed by last year's advertisement. The one that i talked about is so gory that it freaks me out. I believe it is then up to the public to decide for themselves which approach works best for them; not everyone will be able to withstand the goriness of the advert from two years ago. From the media point of view, they should conduct focus groups or hand out surveys to the public before they decide what approach to take, be it the hard or soft approach.

sarahmarlena The purpose of any advertisement is to Remind Inform Persuade or Educate. I think the ad above is largely persuasive in nature because of the emotional connection it makes with viewers. Drawing a parallel to young children, the ad aims to make saving the earth a whole lot more relatable and closer to our hearts. nemo1993 examples of creations from science and technology are like electronic appliances and vehicles. the air conditioners use up alot of electricity,leading to loss of precious fossil fuels. vehicles not only use up a lot of fuel for the engines to run, they also release greenhouse gases like carbon monoxide, harming the ozone layer of our Earth.

ruskinong 1. Mass media has the ability to influence the perceptions and ideas of the public masses out there. So it is a certainty that it has to play a part to encourage people to go green and be sustainable. After all, it has to be sustainable on its moral goals of providing correct information and promoting good acts within its viewers. 2. I personally find that the current batch of youths are pretty apathetic towards environmental issues as they wouldn’t want to inconvenience themselves by going the extra mile to make a difference. However, I am seeing an increase in the number of passionate youths who are advocating the environmental messages through different platforms and this is indeed a sign that younger kids have really understood the messages. 3. Science and technology has no doubt increased our overall energy demand, but it has not made ‘saving the earth’ more difficult. As advancement comes, we see more eco-unfriendly and convenient products, but we also see new forms of energy sources; solar, hydro, etc. This, I believe, is still a matter of convenience. Whether if people are willing to go the extra mile to make the change. Technology is but a catalyst. 4. Globalisation actually brings people together for many different causes. Be it business, or economic cooperation. There are actually cases whereby students from different countries come together to brainstorm and explore different methods to work together to advocate environmental messages across to the masses. For example, in 2009, ECO Singapore organized a World Environment Conference, which saw the participation of many individuals and organizations to come together for the same cause; promote environmental actions and messages.

edrea I disagree that the mass media does not play its part to encourage people to save the Earth. Programmes like "Saving Gaia" have been broadcasted to educate and inform people on the effects of global warming. The media also helps to promote and participates in events such as Earth Day and Earth Hour. This helps to remind people that there are events held to help save the Earth. Celebrities in the media are also showing their support by showing and telling us which products in the market are eco-friendly and even provides the information on where we can get them to make our own home "green" too. It is not entirely true that the youths of today have no concern for environmental issues. There are some youths who are passionate for saving the Earth and would go out of their way to spread the message to their friends and family on how and what we can do to help the environment. I feel that the advancement in Science and technology is linked to increased power consumption. However, it is only due to science and technology that there is ways where we can reduce our pollution to the environment today. But these are only alternate resources of energy the decision lies on the people decide to use it or not. Globalisation bring people together to not only save the Earth but also brings a closer bond to people from different countries. It has brought around ideas from people across the world. People from different countries do come together to try and find a solution to help the environment. This is because global warming causes climate change which causes even more undesirable problems. Even the process of slowing down global warming itself has brought goverments and people from around the world together to try and save the Earth. From my point of view, I think that this is actually become a habit among youths as more youths have this " heck care attitude " as more youths actually have the mentality that as long as they have the money they can just jolly well not bother about anything. They can leave the air-conditioners and fan on at the same time, wasting water without sparing a thought for anything and also leaving the computer on for the whole night. These are all examples of youths being irresponsible and inconsiderate as they don't even feel concern for the environment issues that are actually a threat to the earth. I agree that the advancement in Science and technology has caused a tremendous increase in power consumption. This tremendous increase is due to the fact that more people are actually advancing and upgrading themselves to enable them to use the basis of computing to help them in their daily work as well as for their own personal usage. People also use computer as tool for gaming to allow them to relieve stress. People are actually starting to use e-mails instead of letters that were use last time to actually communicate. Tehchnology advances very fast, hence more and more people will eventually think of it as a common necessity for their work and daily lives. Computer has also become a basis for social networking of making new friends from overseas as well as new friends from the same country. Hence, power consumption has tremendously increase which increase the difficulty of saving the earth as the demand for power is increasing day by day. Therefore there is a need to generate more power which in turn cause more fossil fuels and natural gases to burn which pollutes the air due to the combustion of the fuels and gases. This will cause more and more amount of carbon dioxide produce which is a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. Globalisation has actually bring people together in an attempt to save the earth due to the fact that globalisation actually bonds people of different races together. Which allows more people to actually come together to save the earth. Governments of different have been working together to reduce carbon dioxide emission due the fact that they have become aware of the risk of global warming. A lot of people will choose to neglect them and it is the people around us who influence it. During my secondary school life, we play a part in saving the environment by collecting recycle materials (newspaper, old clothes, plastic bottles, etc.) I think that we, the people can participate more in the events about environment. Documentaries about endangered animals and worldwide deforestation are often aired in channels such as national geographic or discovery channel. This allows people to observe what is happening out there in the wild while we are comfortably sheltered at home. Campaign advertisements are also often aired in between shows to further educate the public what can be done to save the earth. 2)Most Youth today often care more about individual comfort and convenience above everything else. They do not concern themselves with the environment when there are more important issues like exams or their social life. Youths are not oblivious to the reality out there, they just don’t care because they have the mentality that one individual can’t really make a difference. Globalisation causes the people to go into a frenzy to build their economy. At that time, people will be too busy trying to earn more money than to care about ‘minor’ issues like ‘saving the earth’. They probably would also require a lot of natural resources which they will waste no time in getting as their first priority are earning money.

Many television channels around the world are broadcasting what is happening in the world these days such as global warming which results in flooding in many countries. By doing so, I believe, it raises our awareness to go green. Not only that, many programmes on how to save the earth are available on your televisions now. You can find out what product is environmentally friendly and ways to play your parts to save the earth such as reuse, reduce and recycle. Although mass media has played its part, it can do more on its part such us broadcasting more often on the environment issues as mass media is the fastest way to inform people about the issues. Only small groups of youth have concern for environment issues today. Excuse such as they do not know how to play their part is commonly given by them. Seriously, school and parents should let them know what is happening today and ways to go green. They only spend hours playing games everyday. This activity waste the electricity which means reduce the fossil fuel to generate electricity. Today, I could hardly find people cycling to the market. We tend to use public or private transports to reach our destination as they save our time. By doing so, the amount of fuel that is needed increases. Another example is desktop and laptop. We can hardly sitting down without laptop or desktop in front of us in one day. Laptop/desktop really makes our life easier. We can just google any information that is needed for our assignment and we don’t need to carry so much notes/books today as we can simply type out and save them in our laptop. However laptops need so much power. The increasing number of laptops that are used lead to the increase of power consumption. I believe that globalisation brings people together in an attempt to save the earth. Leaders from different regions come together and discuss on the global warming issues and find idea and solution to save the earth.

Most of the youth are spoilt by the easy access through technology that they forget about the environment which they are living in. For example, I have noticed teenagers saying “no” to plastic bags when they purchase something from the grocery store. This shows some concern in the youth for the environment and is the small step into saving the Earth. Now, mobile vehicles are used instead which consume a lot of the natural resources and produce a lot of harmful gases which damage the environment and us severely. However, advancement in science and technology has also created the convenience that we have now such as cars, trains, planes and buses. Without these services, most of us would spend most of our time travelling with animals which takes a much longer period of time. Therefore there is a consequence in every action. 4) Globalisation is a way to bring people from all around the world into one connection and banner. Governments usually use globalization to increase profits for their company by opening new branches all around the world. Many forests have been destroyed due to this actions taken by the government as money is the first thing that comes into their mind. However, this steady income will not last long if governments continue doing such action as Earth had limited resources. From my personal view, i feel that the television would be able to influence people to go green as its very common to see advertisment about being environmental friendly etc. 2. I do not agree to this because there are always some black sheeps among us, perhaps they may be the one of those that are not concern with the environmental issue that we are facing now. However some youths who are concern about the environmental issues will try to reduce they use of plastic bags. As for me, i will try to say no to plastic bags when i do not need it. If everyone saved one plastic bag per day, we can save alot of plastic bags!! :D 3. I do not agree to this because the recent inventions of appliances like fridge and television all comes with the energy saving features. Looking at the recent technological improvement for transport, the new cars nowadays are hydrid, with soem running on natural gas (CNG), or even electrical powered.
