Green Media?
The media is making going green hip and happening but how long can this last? What do you think?
azrokujo it wont last because its an IN thing NOW.. but what is it later? the trend will always be base on how long the people will put their attention to it.. n people\'s attention will not last.. hip and happening trend will die and be reborn and die again and reborn.. trend is invented by media, if a trend last too long people will get bored. Thus media will always have to change trend.
even if its ever evolving.
But if media constantly evolve the green trend to a higher trend then it will last longer.
sharalyn it will be able to last long, as long as they manage to constantly capture the attention of the teenagers and make them feel attach and want to be a part of it in the green movement. moreover, if going green is now becoming a more hip and happening events, i bet it will be easier to get their attention. and also to get them involve in it. as teenagers now is all about hip and happening. and when one start doing it, slowly their peers will start due to peer influence. so as long as its able to capture their attention and its fun and enjoyable, memorable and easy to get their hands on it. i bet it will last long.

Going green is hip now as we are all influenced by people around us. But as time past, people will soon forget what is use to be popular and do what is hip at that time. So sooner or later everyone will only think of going green once in a while and not always be in their mind anymore.
raymond Using media to promote going green and making it hip and happening is a good idea, however, with the amount of things that uses media to advertise on, it is very hard to capture one's attention for long. It will only last for a period of time before it is replaced by another advertisement. We cannot have high hopes that using media to promote going green will succeed, but to have campaigns and talks on going green in conjunction with the advertising method used through the media to enhance and maximise the effect of making going green hip and happening.
kai Personally I think that the strategy of making going green hip and happening will last for a long time because going green is an ongoing thing that I think will never stop. Making green hip and happening have been around for very long, recycling bags are a trend and shops like starbucks and body shop have been promoting through their products and advertisements for quite a long time. I think that the media should update and keep up with the people's lifestyle and by constantly expose people to going green so as to capture their attention and make it relevant to them , because no matter what media is one of the fastest way to reach out to people.

landa At the initial stage, interested parties will try their best to introduce the importance of the green hip to gain social awareness.More crowd would join the promoting of green hip through the media for a period of time where the mature stage take place. mabel Well, Whether the media last long depends on their creativity, on how they are going to advertise to make going green hip and happening. Normally, people that find the advertisement interesting tends to remember it longer and chats about it longer. The more interesting and creative it is, the more they can leave a mark in people's mind. However, nothing last long as human tends to forget things easily. Because living in a society today, media is almost everywhere, interacting with almost everyone's life. yet however, whether this idea will last or not is another issue altogether. everyone is chasing after which is the most stylish item and which is the most in trend, even if this idea were to happen, it would not last long because all things would go out of trend, be it is hip and happening or not.

wawaudyn Well, this is my honest opinion.I guess it will take for awhile only. Only at the beginning or a few percentage of people will be alert on those kind of advertisement. It's useless spending thousands of dollars creating going green and hip & happening media.Probably not all will be interested in such things because some will say it's a waste of time and in the end they didn't get anything.
elishalyx Yes the media makes the green movement hip. For example the Live Earth concert in '07 harnessed the power of the TV and the draw of the various superstar musicians who were performing to spread the message that the green movement is serious business and it really needs attention.
The green movement can still continue to remain relevant in the media if governments and non-profit organizations are constantly aware of the various outlets on the internet that can help them to publicize their cause. creating a facebook fan page really does help. and having a well designed site will also help spread their green message
liqi personally i dont think the reinforcing of the green project in media will remain as happening if another 5 years past etc. it will not stop suddenly but i believe the impact wouldnt be as strong and people will then take it as another advertisement and gradually ignore it.
michelle I believe that the media is a powerful tool and a great way of reaching out to the public. Thus as long as the media advertise going green as hip and happening, people will will be effected, follow suit and lead a green lifestyle. This is as poeple will be affected by the media whether they realise it or not. coldpotato I don't think this will last long. People tend to see and forget if the media is only a short period of time. But in another view, if the advertising is an on-going ads, public may take it seriously and gain social awarenes.

The media has failed to play a significant role in bringing about significant role in bringing about change and commitment to support the need to take concrete action to save the planet. Do you agree with that?
hxong For me, personally I think that it is not true to say that media has failed to play its role to do so.
1.Awareness of people increases
Through the message spreading from the media, there are more people start to engage in some activities that held to save our planet years by years. (eg. Earth Hour)
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating.
In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.
On Saturday 27 March, Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

reeohnah I think it goes both ways.
Disagree.
I think media is being use as a tool to reach out and create awareness about our dying world. One example is Al Gore\'s inconvenient truth. After watching it, i do not feel the slightest exaggeration cause what he did was to present the truth with statistic and numbers.
However, indeed one can argue that numbers can be edited or change. Yet i chose to believe it because of the what i have previously read up, combined with the actual evidence or personal experience(environment i am living at everyday).
Following with an example:Rising Temperature.
According to Al Gore in Inconvenient Truth, he had shown statistics of the temperature rising every year. This is something we can feel.
According to the internet survey by Nielsen and Oxford University in July 2007, 74% of the viewers say that they have change their daily habits to a more green one after watching the film.
Therefore, i disagree that the media is exaggerating the dire condition of environment. It is through media, we have a better understanding. And this allow us to take the first step ahead in playing a part to save our mother earth.
But then again, media tends to exaggerate the condition of our environment so as to attract the attention of the public to this issue.
One can argue that the exaggeration may be too extreme.
However, with some governments showing less support and their doubts, this perhaps is the only way to raise awareness.

Develop countries versus developing countries.
Who is responsible for the most emission of green house gases? With governments pushing the blame on each other and not going straight to the topic, this may be the reason why media are exaggerating. So that we can sit down and be serious about taking measures to protect our environment.SO that through each and everyone\'s power and effort, we make a difference.

What ever that is shown on the media is true. Though at times, they might exaggerate it too much, they made it this way to arouse our concern for our dying planet which is a good cause. Humans are ignorant about the dangers that they are facing everyday and are avoiding the facts to remain happy or trouble-free. Under such circumstances, the current situation will only deteriorate. I feel that the fastest way to save the earth is that the government impose immediate rules on going green.

It is not possible to confirm that what the media say might be true or not but saving the earth is our responsibility. Even if the media do exaggerates, it is a form of notice to us that we should stop we are doing now and think of ways to salvage the situation. I do think that media is the best way to raise our awareness on doing our job and preserve the earth. Global warming is a really important factor that we have to consider. As we all know, due to the large scale of burning fossil fuels and deforestation, the polar caps are melting which will lead to the rising of water level.

Despite the known tendency for the Media to over sensationalise news, the events one may look into are still pretty much based on actual happenings than pure speculation. I do not deny that these events can contain hidden agendas but even as i would say beyond it, that i can and probably would believe in such a protrayment. The trend that i am seeing is an increasing case of severity and lacklustre in conservation efforts. To simply put, pardon my ignorance, but no commended achievement had been documented ever since the \'big hoo-hah\' of a hole in the sky had been publicly announced. Rather scenerios of failed policies seemed to continue with devastation becoming more and more commonplace. Reports ( which i may have read on random basis ) seems to claim that global efforts are inadequete, with global emission cuts targets listed not reached, alone with more envrionmental hazards occuring such as oil spills, wildfires. The booming global population and its voracious appetite in consumeric and exotic goods should also be adding in quite a strain to the environment, in terms of heavy industrialisation (deforesting, pollution) and a reverse \'pull\' element that can cripple any short run radical changes (even if it may help due to fear of short term losses and market confidence). Thus, if i take a \' no smoke without the fire \' policy on these, it would sound very credible for us to be running in an unhealthy notion or so i believe. Of course the direct impact on our lives by such \'hazards\" (unless it actually happened ) can be quite elusive with any participation on green efforts quite meaningless on an individual part with the general spectrum heading in a detrimentive direction.

The Earth that we are living in, is currently undergoing lots of \'work\' to keep the world a better and easy place to live in. That means that technologies are improving continuously and more energy is required to fulfill the needs of the people too. More energy required,that means that more pollutions are produced.
Media has been advertising about hybrid car productions. For me,there\'s a lot of meaning in between those lines. It means that the car production companies are playing their parts to save their own world too! It\'s to say that our Mother Earth is dying of \'illnesses\' of all those creations by human activities.
What we can do as a citizen is that we can play a part to save our Earth by putting in little effort and when everyone plays a part,it makes a difference in it.
jagades Media attention to the issues does help raise awareness to combat those environmental issues globally. They might exaggerate it too much but that is to increase awareness and to reach out to public. Locally, television coverage features the issues repeatedly and reporters have put together articles covering Earth Hour etc. Therefore, media has an important role to play in educating the public. Because there isn't a need to. People living on earth do not need to listen to radios, watch tv or even read
the newspaper to know what's happening to our environment. We, as people living on earth, are or have begin
to experience the drastic change in our environment, both locally and globally.
However, I do not exclude the possibility that the media may exaggerate the situations of our environment

The truth is, our environment is slowly experiencing extreme changes. The north pole is slowly melting and
the tropical rainforest is slowly being razed down year after year. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the media

It's because the media have a role to create an awareness about the state of our own home planet. They also have responsibilty to educate the public.

The sea level is rising due to the global warming which is cause by us. Everyday the earth temperature is rising and each one of us can feel it and we know it. benchia I disagree as I believe that the media is trying to educate people about the environmental issues and is attempting to inspire us into action. They show the real dangers that we could possibly be facing in the near future, caused by gobal warming. Ice caps in the North pole are melting because of gobal warming and green house gases. We have to take responsibility as we are the cause of gobal warming and green house gases. We deplete our natural resources, burn fossil fuel and deforest at an alarming rate, which contributes and causes gobal warming and increase green house gases. Therefore, i believe that the media is not exaggerating.
zan I strongly disagree that the media is exaggerating about the environmental damage. One is that we are already experiencing the increase in temperature and as said in documentaries, the increase in temperature is caused by environmental damage. Two is that news are usually telling us the truth and we have even seen footage of incidents caused by environmental damage. Three is that we ourselves know that we are damaging the environment and one example would be the logging in Kalimantan. The media take note of the things that are happening around us and letting us know so that we would stop damaging the environment. Therefore, the media is not exaggerating as we can see the truth for ourselves.

Also, occurrences such as the rising sea levels and deforestation within the Amazon Rainforest as been reported by not one but multiple sources within the media. Thus, it is unlikely that such occurrences has been fabricated.

cookies I disagree that the media is exaggerating about the situation because I think we've all experienced it for ourselves firsthand how dire the condition of the environment we're living in is. Case in point- global warming. I think it is pretty obvious how we're being affected by it tremendously and it(the all-too familiar global warming, that is) needs no further introduction or explanation.
However, I do not deny the possibility of it; that the media could be exaggerating about the situation. They might be capitalizing on the situation for their own benefits i.e. fund-raising. Again, I am assuming, because I feel rather strongly that the environmental problems we are facing is actually as dire as the situation that the media has portrayed.

The media is not exaggerating about the dire condtions. Because we can feel it and experience it ourselves. Example like Global warming , Polar icecaps melting, climate changes, increased natural disaster like flash floods and drought due to climate change has proven that the media is not joking around with us.
We are the cause of global warming but we denied the truth. So the media have to re-educate us, telling us to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and seek cleaner and greener alternative of fuel to help save the earth.
One example of a documentary, is Planet Earth. It shows us how beautiful the earth and the animals are, but all of it will change as polar ice is melting, the polar bears will soon die out and become extinct. The culprit of this is global warming, which reflects to us as we cause global warming.
In the events that the media is indeed exaggerating, It is done out of good will. As people need something hard to hit them before they realize that they need to do something for the earth. So we should do our part and make a difference.

We can saw and feel all the effect of the environment that happen around us. The environment of the earth is worsen and become troblesome to our life style. The people still continue destroying the environment and they do not realize the dire condition of the environment.

know more about the environmental problems. They are caused by a few factors. First of all, it is the human factor. As our society are constantly pushing for convenience, one of the invention are plastics which are daily produced.
As a result, the production of plastic bag has caused a large amount
of gas guzzler which causes air pollution that further leads to global warming. On top of that, the media shows that global warming causes the raise of temperature , that will also cause the ice at the north pole to melt, leading to a rise in sea level.
However, there is a change in temperature which we can experience it ourselves. On top of that, the weather recently is getting warmer and the seasons were inaccurate. This allow the media not to have the need to exaggerate on the dire condition of the environment.

Media plays an important part in educating people which are ignorant about the conditions of the world they're living. Global warming, deforestation are human acts that contributes greatly to the dire conditions of the environment. I am sure that most of us have felt the effects of global warming because the moment we reach our classroom, we are already perspiring with our T-Shirt wet and sticking to our back. In the North and South Pole the polar icecaps are melting, also the size of both have became smaller as it was 10 years ago. Besides if you the ice and snow keeps on melting the ocean level would rise. How many more levels do you think it would rise before it would cover a small island like Singapore?
Also, Global Warming is causing the destruction to some of our ecological systems such as the mangrove swamps and/or coral reefs. Animals, plants or any other organisms living in these ecological system would go extinct at an alarming rate. Earth would then lose the beauty of these ecological systems.
In conclusion, the media may exaggerate the condition of our environment, however it is all just to create an awareness. By having an awareness of such you can help do your part by preventing Mother Earth from suffering anymore damage.

Climate change. Global warming. We often hear about it on the news, the radio and read about it in the papers and magazines. But are you acting on this large scale problem? Has the media influenced your attitude and behaviour when it comes to saving the environment?
jervaishowes In regards to whether or not I am doing anything to save the environment, I would have to say, no I am not. I think that the media has not gone very far in promoting the green movement, we may hear of earthquakes and natural disasters all over the world, but we never hear about how climate change may be affecting it. Thus people would take it to be just a chance event as they have for millions of years. Thus the media would need to try engage the audience in rational discussion in order for a positive change to take place.
noisebomb Hey guys. The media has somewhat influenced me as i am more aware of the state of the world and start to recycle recycable stuffs. I think that the media does not fully influence everyone as we still see people not recycling, not saving electricity for example; they do not turn off their lights when there is no one in the room. I believe that the media can put more effort to make sure that most people are going green.
ncoleey I do think I am playing my part, like using both sides of a paper, rejecting the use of carriers if I do not need one. I might not be organizing or participating in large scale environmental events, but i do think my little actions do help, at least. I may even be able to influence my friends to follow too. I do not think the media has influenced me in my attitude and behavior. My opinion is that, you don't actually need someone to tell you "hey, you should play a part to save the environment!" . To me, it came naturally that i should help preserve the environment.
savitha I would say that i am playing my part in saving the environment as i do recycle things at home,save electricity as it saves money and save paper.It is not because of the media influence but simply because of my awareness towards global warming and my understanding on the situation that I play my part in saving the environment. jiaqi I think that i did play my part in saving the environment by recycling recyclable stuffs, and use both sides of the paper to reduce the amount of papers waste. By understanding the situation that happen to our environment, i knew that it is a need for me to play my part in saving the environment. I think that the media doesn't influence me much in my attitude and behavior towards saving the environment. As we still get to see people not willing to play their part to save our environment, where some are even worse by causing more pollution to our environment. minli I think the media had influenced me to be more environmentally-friendly such as switching off the lights when no one is using the room or recycling papers; but not effective enough to change my attitude or behaviour in saving the environment on a large basis. Personally, i don't think that the media has stressed the problems of not saving the planet enough to get more people to start recycling their unwanted items. Perhaps they should send a stronger message to the public to let them know the importance of recycling. Though i'm not recycling on a large scale, i believe that everyday actions will contribute a little to saving the environment somehow.
candy023 I have became more aware of the global warming problems through the media. I have been cutting down on the usage of the air-conditioner, not over using plastic bags and have been making an effort to try and recycle recyclable products due to the influence of the media. I believe that the media have been making an effort to spread the need for recycling and stopping the pollution. However, I think that the media can only do so much and the rest is up to the people to put in their efforts into saving the environment.
farahani On a personal note, the media does influence me on saving the environment. Everyday, news on the climate change and global warming would be broadcasted on most local channel news. Its almost impossible to miss. I do feel I am playing a part in saving the environment like recycling used papers, plastics and cans. Not wasting paper and such. Eventhough my actions are not something noticable, but, it does help the environment in many ways.

I like the idea of the 60 Earth Hour, where you switch off your lights to take your stand against climate change. I suppose it is a very attractive way for people like us, to participate and help save the environment at the same time. I won\'t lie, i am not helping a lot though, i just do my little part such as switching off the lights or fan when not in use, but, i do believe that these small parts helps in a little way.

However i digress, I do try to cut down on my paper usage, turn of lights/fans use the air conditioner to cool the room then use a fan. I don\'t bring the items for recycling down to the bin, but i do place it in a bag set aside for recycling and leave it to my brother to bring down.

junhao Frankly speaking, I do not feel the media has really influenced me much on saving the environment. Partly the reason because I do not watch advertisement or listen to radio like I use to in the past, but nonetheless, I do try to use the fan instead of the air-conditional system to cool myself and off the light when there’s no one in any room. To me, these little actions are pretty common sense to me because as a Singaporean, what comes right into our minds are to save as much money as we could in order to survive in the future. Furthermore, I do feel that certain people, not only in Singapore, are more money driven and as well as benefits driven in the society. Therefore, they tend to only do things which really affect them in a way or by gaining benefits out from it. As for the other part of the community, they might be thinking that in a population of 100 people, so what if I don’t help save the environment if 99 people are doing it, does that make a different? Think about it, if everyone could gain extra benefits such as lower taxes in our country, I am pretty sure everyone would start caring for our environment. Sorry for my selfishness, but I will only do something extraordinary if it’s really came to a point it affects too much. Peace.

Why ?, the big question . It is because of the economic and financial interests . No one wants to give something for ‘nothing’ .
Most people tend to think on a short-term basis , and of course saving the climate is completely absurd in that context . However , they do not know that they are paying an even a greater price in the long term . I took Pure Geography in secondary school , I know how bad the climate change and excessive global warming can get . Will money be able to protect them when Mother nature unleash her wrath ? Does collecting pieces of paper and yellow shiny metal outweigh saving ‘The Blue Marble’ , our only home in the vast universe ?
For the media . I think they have done their part . Although the message is somewhat not clear . Most commercials only show how to save the environment not why we should save it . Other than these commercials and posters , the government have to step in to enforce this positive new culture of reducing , reusing and recycling .
phamnguyen In my personal experience, on the way home everyday (2-3 Km)...I come to notice that there is only one Bus Station provided with a 3-bin dustbin, where rubbish will be classified correctly. Therefore, eventhough I do convince myself not to anyhow throw rubbish into dust-bin, but just what can I do in this situation besides dump it into a normal dust-bin or should I choose the second option, where I need to walk for 1-2 km just for the sake of throwing the rubbish.
And personally, I think the Media has done a fine job, educating people not to littering, saving electricity, not wasting paper..ect...but what really matters is the mindset of the people who watch those advertisements...For instance,littering or not pretty much depends on how they actually think of it, whether It is bad or It is okay to do so. alybelle Honestly, I'm not the type of person who would go the extra mile just to find a bin which is made specifically for dumping plastic, glass or paper that is. I think, it is a common thing for all Singaporeans. We only throw it in the bin when we see one, otherwise, back to the normal green bins that you see everywhere. I think we are used to being pampered with everything that we want, everywhere we need or want it. However, we are not to be blame for it as we are living in the city which is full of ease.
I think that media did quite a good job in reminding people to save electricity or throw rubbish in the specified bins. It may not be effective to some people, but I'm certain that it has affected a minority percentage of Singaporeans in the effort to save the Earth. Despite that, I do try my best to switch off all the lights or electrical sockets which are not being used when I\'m at home.That's the best that I can do for now.

melvina Nowadays we often hear a lot of environmental issues from earthquake, global warming to the issue of high sea water level. I would say that media plays a great role not only in promoting the negative effects to this issue but also in influencing people\'s behaviours. From media, I have become more aware of my part to the environment and have started in participating in many ways to reduce this negative impact such as bringing my own recycle bag whenever I go shopping, turning off electricity whenever not in use and bringing my own water bottle to reduce the unnecessary usage of plastic bottle. Media did help in promoting the eco-friendly solution to solve the environmental issues but it is still sad to see that only a minor percentage of people are actually take action to do it.

A few years back, there was this advertisement whereby a few teens explain the harms on why we need to save the earth and how to. After that advert, I realized that I actually followed and switched off the electrical sockets every time I stop using the appliance. However, I feel that the media is still lacking as these adverts are getting lesser and it’s not played often. I feel that parents play a greater role. My parents keep nagging at me at a young age to off the lights or fans. So it’s already a habit. However, I will not go the extra mile to recycle items. If I see a recycle bin, okay, I will try my trash according. In my estate, there’s only one recycle bin and it’s located a few blocks away from mine. Thus, I feel it’s a chore to carry the heavy trash and walk quite far just to throw it. Thus, I feel that they should increase the number of recycle bins and place it at the area where everyone can easily access to it.

yuming I felt that the media have do a lot of things to encourage people to save earth, but I don’t think that all of the people have aware of the importance of that. For me, thouth I felt that it is very important to save our earth, but sometimes I was very lazy to do something, like the seperation of the rubbish. phamnguyen in my opinion, the media has done a fine job, educating the people to save the environment, I really do act differently from what i did in the past by the way I used electricity, water and paper. however, I think its time to take some realistic actions, which is always more effective.Starting with the change of all normal dustbins by recycle-bin comprising 3 different bins meant for different trash, paper, bottle and wasted-food. and by doing so, it provides a more convenient way for people to practice proper diposal of refuse.
Llittle from my experience, many bank-outlets keep the the lights on even during the night, after office hour, which is very eletricity-intensive even though I know that its somewhat for security purposes. it seems like large companies tend not to act appropriately. The electricty saved by 10 people may just be wasted by this kind of unconsiderate behaviour.Therefore, the media should be a better job to influence these companies.

p1011405 Many people use disposable plastics for sheer personal convenience; however, they fail to realise the amount of damage and impact disposable plastics have on the environment. Plastics are non-biodegradable and are extremely hard to dispose, they require huge landfills as just your average plastic bottle takes approximately 500years to decompose, this poses a huge problem as the plastics take up space in landfills for an indefinite period of time. We have to learn to stop our inconsiderate consistent usage of disposable plastics and switch to more sustainable alternatives, and the time to start is now!
bernard Well,honestly speaking,i think the media,newspapers and radio,etc has influenced me,with regard to my mental attitude towards this issue.As it has made me think, why shouldn't i do my part to save the earth from global warming? As a result,after viewing such advertisements, that display the effects of such issues as global warming, i've in fact try my best to save the earth by recycling used water bottles, used paper and etc. therefore, the media has in fact made a impact on me,with relevance to such issues. During my secondary school life, we play a part in saving the environment by collecting recycle materials (newspaper, old clothes, plastic bottles, etc.) I think that we, the people can participate more in recycling and try not to use non-biodegradable materials if we can.
prodigypatrick what i can say that it doesnt influence me at all. not saying that the media is not doing enough, but what they are lack of is telling us the importances of it. to me, what commonly heard is to reduce the emission of some gases which will cause or add on to the speed of tearing the ozone layer, but is that important and is it effective if i'm the only one doing it? how would i know that there are other people doing it as well?

joekirno89 i think media influencing in effecting people to save this world. Instead of saving world advertisement, they will advertise more about new style of car. As we know, cars produce carbon monoxide which is the major cause of Global warming. if media really want to influence people about global warming issues, they should support people to reduce the use of personal car and start to use public transportation which is very efficient in singapore.
hamizah I feel that I did do something to save the earth but I don’t think i had done the very best. To my opinion the media does not very influencing us in saving the earth. They should make it more influencing by telling what the side effect of it is. But on our hand, we must ourselves more or less know the side effect and at least do something about it by example bring your own recycle beg.

neslee92 About saving the environment, I feel that the media had certainly played a part on influencing us about consequences. However, we treat those warnings very lightly to the point where we don't care anymore as we feel that it does not affect us in the short run.
I don't think anything can be done anymore to stop global warming now but as humans, what we can do now is slow the process of global warming so that our future generations can at least live through it.

xiiaobk To me personally, i do occasionally recycle stuffs and not taking plastic bags when there isn't a need for them to save the environment. but when it comes to media influences, i do not think so as for example earth hour, i am still able to see my whole estate lighted up and no one is even trying to save electricity after constant reminder only for some to save on their bills. For one to do alone, its possible but to influence others to saving the environment, it's hard.

tokenix I think media plays a large role in helping to save the earth. Through advertisments on televison and poster, people can be educated on the effects of 'not taking care of their mother earth'.
Media educates majority of the people but for children, parents play a larger role. Through their actions, parents can show their children how they can help save the earth. For example, packing plastic bottles and throwing them into the recycle bins, accumulate newspaper and unwanted paper and selling them to rag-and-bone man or throwing into the recycle bin.
Law also play a part in helping to save the earth. If one litters in public, and unluckily, they get caught, they will be fined. The thought of being fined, will deter people from littering.
Self discipline is also important. If one is not self-discipline, no matter how educated he is, it is also useless. For example, on the light and air con 24 hours even if nobody is at home. This is a waste of electricity. Explains partially why electricity price keeps increasing. Natural resources will deplete at a faster rate if people continue this act.
Therefore, media, government and parents have to work hand in hand to help save the earth. It is everybody's effort.

i DONT think so. More and more people are using Air-con now thanks to the hot weather..
More air-con --> global warming--> even more ppl on air-con ---> even more global warming .... so it's like not helping
adindasavitri I think is a bit too late to start saving our environment. It should start it earlier. In Malaysia there is no plastic bag in every Saturday in all the supermarket. Better than nothing, hence we should start saving our environment now before the end of the world.

* The emissions from the cars we drive
* The pollution emitted from factories used to make everyday items
* The power plants that produce non-renewable electricity for our every day lives
* The massive landfills overflowing with our garbage
* The conversion of forest land into pasture, urban or wasteland areas
All of these things that we rely on and typically take for granted are making the earth a less friendly environment for us... for our children.
tcs Yes of course, i always reduce the use of plastic bags when purchasing small amount of item. And place those useless paper, clothes and others into recycling bag for collection every weekend. Recently, lots of natural disaster has happen, such as the australia flooding , si chuan earthquake and etc.... These are a type of wake up call for citizen to save our planet. Just keep remembering and doing the 3Rs (reduce, recycling and reuse).

elixia We often hear about the climate changes around the world and on global warming on the news and such. However, the media only showed us the surface of this problem, it does not inform us of why it is currently happening. As for myself, I did researched on the current topic for one of my project in the past and learnt about global warming through one of my subject in secondary school (Geography).
I feel that everyone is acting on this large scale problem in their own way. We are building more environment friendly malls (City Square) and have more recycling bins on the streets. In the individual households, we would collect old newspaper and magazines to sell to the rag-and-bone man. We would also use environment friendly lightbulbs, electricity saving air-condition and turn off the electrical appliances that are not in use. Even though we gain from our contributions to the environment, earning a few more dollars from selling newspaper and have lower electricity bills, we are actually saving our environment.
Media plays a part in influencing those that updates themselves with the current society by watching the news or reading the papers. But what about those that do not? How are we going to inform them about this problem? The media should also inform us about why the climate is changing and emphasize on the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle).
I help the environment by reusing papers and turn off the lights when not in use. Although it is not much, but it helps the environment, as less electricity = less burning of coal etc. I feel that its better to start late then never, we should do our part for our home.
sailesh I definately play my part in sustaining mother earth. I started saving electricity at home and and even buy groceries with resuable bags. Everytime I see plastic bag that is thrown away, I would pick it up and reuse it. I would go three days depressed if I purposely threw a non biodegradable item. I refrain from driving and I would take public transport. I always recycle paper or mash it up to create paper. We all should love your planet because it is our home, our habitat, our live. Long live mother Earth. We should not just survive, we must thrive.

elijahykw When it comes to topics like global warming and climate change, I think I can speak for most of the youths that we are not really aware of what's happening with the environment globally cause we don't get involved or we just don't care. Even though we are aware that the Earth is dying by the "little harm" that every individual is doing everyday, we still carry on with them because we don't experience the after effect (consequences). As for the media wise, I think they are doing their best to encourage people to be green, like the recent "Go Green" song that they released in the media by NEA. However, I personally feel that we are the ones who don't participate in being green. Furthermore, we, Singaporeans, follow the concept of "monkey see, monkey do" and for whatever we don't see, we don't follow.
lamekenny I feel that we are not really bothered by this problem as we have a "bo chap" attitude towards the environment. Most (typical) Singaporean would not even bother to help save the earth by recycling papers, switching off the air-condition etc. Unlike the Japanese, where they would really make an effort to separate the trash (paper,plastic and glass).
The media has certain influences on us, we may follow their advice on bringing your own bag to the market etc... FOR a while. But give us time, and we would revert back to our old lifestyle ! Which is just to "hack care" everything...
ieatmanga The media has influenced me to play a better part in saving Gaia from global warming and climate change. I have been recycling my old used papers as well as plastic bottles.Ever since I realised about the delirious situation of global warming, I have been only using the fan only and that is on absolutely hot days when ventilation is necessary.I have never used an air conditioner since I got self aware of the global problems.I do not use plastic bags when I go shopping at NTUC supermarkets as I know that it affects the situation a small teeny weeny way. XD
yougotsole My family took up the habit of recycling when they have sent us a few recycling bags. We took this initiative because we believe we are doing little bits to save the earth. My mother in particular would pester us not to throw the tin cans and plastic bottles that we e had purchased en masse during birthdays and special events just to put them in the same bags and give to the green agents that come down every Thursday morning. With this believe the Sabtu family had fulfilled their call to mother nature.
songyang123 Honestly,I think that i am not saving our envirnoment,Personlly,i think the media did not influence me so much because media did not teach us much about how to go green.It only shows us the end of the result due to our ignorance.but from now on we should help save the earth as much as possible,even though, it is a bit late.
jer92 When it comes to saving the earth, I honestly have not done my part=) Even though there are news and media coverage about these stuff, like when the 070707 go green concert was being held, trying to reach out to the younger public through concerts, I didn't feel the need to start recycling. As I feel that humans will not start to act until they have experienced the consequences of their lack of actions on saving the earth. Also as singaporeans, we are more selfish in nature, more "kiasu". We would only do things that would benefit others only if others are doing it. However I feel that if we do not start taking measures now, our future generations will suffer for it. Peace!

Everyone has a part to play in saving the environment.The things we do everyday,for example switching off the lights,throwing away our rubbish in a proper rubbish bin,recycling our old newspaper when the 'karung guni' comes to our estate during the weekends and not littering helps alot in saving the environment.
As for me,i do play my part in keeping the Earth and Singapore clean and green.I dont use hairsprays which has CFCs,my family rarely use the airconditioners and i recycle stuffs like papers,bottles and cans and put them in the colourful bins located around my estate.
I feel that the government has done a good job instilling the idea of saving our environment by organising campaigns,planting new trees,making our malls green like our very own City Square mall and introducing vehicles that do not give out harmful gases.
SMOKING also causes the ozone layer to break down in the long run.The whole world is trying to counter the amounts of smokers by banning cigarettes,etc.Therefore if we are a smoker,we should think of ourselves and also the environment.
Haven't you heard,even cigarettes are GOING GREEN! .With the invention of electronic cigarettes,the harmful smokes are now just water vapour! Amazing.

leonlee23 The overwhelming effects of global warming alarms us humans but in what percentage does normal users actually contribute to the carbon emission compared to large manufactoring companies? But one small step could go a long way. It would take just one individual to stand up against this growing trend to really make a difference.
kuxuezheng I think that the media did not influence me much because there is not much related to climate change and global warming. I think that each and everyone one of us should do their part to prevent climate change and global warming. Because global warming is getting worse every year.
However, there is one show that I have watched about different countries that do their part in saving the earth. One of the country is Japan. For example, when throwing their rubbish, they will separate every different type of material such as plastic, paper, glass and other material and not throw everything in one dustbin. I feel that this is a very good example to follow. This is because it will greatly reduce the effect of global warming as materials such as plastic are remove from prevent burning.
I do help the environment in a small part by reusing the water that is use to wash rice to water plants, switch off light when not in use ...
pochs The fact that it's not an election issue so far means that Singaporeans in general would just leave it to the authorities.Although the media would talk about the issue every now and then,personally,I don't feel that such a long-term issue has made me feel 'vulnerable',even knowing the fact that we're surrounded by (rising) waters.I would only start to feel worried when frequent floodings happen here,especially in Orchard Road to start off with.
And no,I don't recycle that often.But sometimes I would give my old newspapers to the karung guni man.
Perhaps the phrase "clean and GREEN" can be redefined again to the general public.
garys Honestly no. You could say that I'm an average citizen that struggle to keep up with society, juggling my social life and my studies. It is just way to tedious to make visits to the recycling bins as its like a park away.
The only way i contribute to recycling is selling old newspapers to the "karang guni". Which i think is the most common in this society as it literally pays you to "recycle".
anusha Its really bothering that a lot of people do not pay attention to problems of Global warming and climate change. Recently because of floods around the world, many people are becoming more aware of whats going aroung them. But how many people are taking actions to help the environment?
link Fact is even though we reduce our wastage on plastic bags,papers or anything harming the enviroment,there is little humans can do effectively.Even if 1% of the worlds' population does recycle,the effect on the current rate of global warming or cardon emissions still outweighs the benefits.I'm not saying that we should not help, as every little effort does counts in the end.For carbon emissions to effectively reduce it is still up to the big companies to do their part as they are the main contributors.
The media has done an okay job,here and there we see advertisements on tv to reduce electricity water etc.However, it is still up to the viewers to heed their advice.
zudang We acted but i feel that we can do more. Why we have to do more ? Although we can't reverse the situation but we can slow down global warming. NGOs are highlighting concept like 5Rs , Reduce,Reuse,Recycle,Repair,Redistribute and through these steps we can do our part for the environment. Certainly, we can't expect any single individual to change over a night practicing like a "green-man" but we can start bit by bit for the good of environment and in the long run we will achieve our goals.
Media certainly played their role well, we can see more and more information regarding the environment. Finding artists to be green ambassador and integrating environmental factor in shows & dramas are good head-start.. However, the media can still increase more statistic or detrimental effects of our irresponsible actions to warn the public.Letting the public see, for every sheet of paper they are harming their decedents.
Let's do more for the green drive. With us doing first , we can influence more individuals.
janewalks perhaps we need a 'Green Revolution" to convince the world to care for Mother Earth... Most of us have left the responsibility of going green to the government, assuming that we don't have enough 'power' to do our part for the environment- or not even bothering at all. It's really sad how the earth is slowly deteriorating, but majority of us humans do not care about it. I, personally have been well-brought up by my parents, as we collect our recyclables and drop it off at the recycling bins weekly. I have a suggestion as how to 'urge' Singaporeans to be more Earth-friendly- like how the government mass-publicized the proper care and hygiene to be observed during the dengue/SARS period... Mother Earth's health is failing, and we, as her children, should take good care and restore her health.
