tpy01 l0ls! i didn't mention my stand because i\'ve reached the word limit. anyway, media can help because usage of paper are greatly reduced. if more paper are used, trees would be cut down, more carbon dioxide would be given out to the atmostphere which contributes to global warming. electricity can be reduced by switching off pocket socket when not in use instead of putting it on standby mode. this would reduce the amount of energy used and the amount payable of the monthly electricity bill.

But on the other hand the school also must educate their student as we can\'t only depend on the media to promote everything. As time go by people will start to forget those advertisement promotion a Clean & Green Environment. Then, whatever thing that is done will start from ZERO.

weimin i agree with p0860835. The mass media should show more strong impact and emphasize more on it so that it will leave a deep impression about environmental awareness. On other hand, if people are not doing their part on saving the environment, there is no point having so much media on environmental awareness. So everyone got to do their part.

jimz Personally I think media is play an important role on the green issues.Because Singaporean like me most likely will watch television almost everyday, that is why i think if media can take lead on the green issues it will definitely will be a great influence to the public.

In fact, I feel that in comparison to the past, local media have been catching up in terms of promoting environmental awareness, with the recent inclusion of this interstitial (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=83950651597) on Channel 5 between shows, as part of their support for Earth Day. The interstitial was made initially for World Environment Day 2009, and was used again for this year\'s Earth Day. Also, there has been an increase in coverage of \'green\' stories around the world on Channel NewsAsia as well as news on Channel 5 and 8. Newspapers now have more articles on people going green and on companies\' efforts in saving the environment, both offline and online. (Even fuel companies are doing their part doing their part to save the Earth: http://blogs.straitstimes.com/2009/5/12/on-the-road-to-saving-more-fuel). However, this raises one other crucial question. Are people taking enough notice of these bits and pieces of environmental awareness on TV, print, and everywhere else? Because, to be honest, when Nat Ho comes on TV telling me what happens to things when I recycle them, my brain usually switches off like I always do when the ads come on. Not all articles in The Straits Times reporting about \'green\' individuals and companies catch my attention, and I find myself flipping the pages to other articles most of the time. Now it\'s not a question of whether media is doing enough to promote environmental awareness, but whether people are taking enough notice of the efforts of the media. Or at least enough to not treat them as noise to their usual gossip and entertainment news.

collinwang I would like to disagree that the mass media is not doing enough in the promotion of environmental awareness. Not every event will have news value, and this is the main reason why the mass media doesn\'t cover them, and not because they\'re not doing enough. As much as the mass media should raise environmental awareness and educate its publics, it should keep them interested in such topics as well. I also understand where you\'re coming from if you\'re trying to say that the mass media doesn\'t publicise some of the campaigns that many organisations are involved in, leaving the public unknown about their efforts. For example, did you know that Ben&Jerry\'s collaborated with the Environmental Challenge Organisation (Singapore) during the launch of its new flavour, A Cookie Affair? And that Jollibean and Changi Airport have their own methods of going green, which were not shown on television? Honestly, I feel that environmental awareness isn\'t newsworthy enough to be covered in the mass media. Such concerns should be taken care of by schools. Seriously, who doesn\'t even know of at least one of the consequences of the wrath of nature? However, if the focus is on, say, getting lots of people engaged in eco-friendly activities, it would be a better angle for the mass media to cover.
