p0900283 Wow! I didn't know that the ship industry would contribute to killing the earth as well!! I don't think that Singapore would survive without ships. This is because, our maritime industry, itself, is strong and is known to be the busiest port around the world (www.wikipedia,com)! It's not about who or what we should stop using. The recent post was walking causes even more harm to the globe than cars. Does that mean we should stop walking and wheel-chaired for our whole life>> going to new technology like Disney Wall-E (if u notice, most, in fact all are wheel- chaired, although, they can actually walk!) or how about Star Wars? Imagine, we got to ship alot of container cargoes using air. It's an air pollution as well. I'm not against any support for Go Green, but we have to realize that this world is getting older every second. It will not stop. Like our black hair turning grey as we get older, that goes the same for our earth. Nothing will stop global warming, except that whatever we do now, slows down the impact of global warming itself, but has it really been working? Are people really listening to the cries of the environmentalist saying "Save Gaia!!!" I don't think so, because my family, cousins and neighbours are not responding to this call. There is still hope, but not hopeful enough.

kelvinteo Yea I agree with the first comment on Singapore not being able to survive without ships. However, since we all know that large container ships contribute to environmental pollution at a much larger scale than cars, and because we can't do much to stop it, the least we could do, and are doing now, is to minimise the effects of global warming. And we start by playing our own part, no matter how small it is, to saving our environment. And my stand is, as long as there is a group of people who believe in a cause and walk in this belief, there is still hope.

suki As for me,I can proudly say yes! Yes!I have done and am doing doing my part till now to save the Earth.It may not be easy to be done then said as we are all living in such a comfortable environment and we have nothing to be worried about.Its just all about us kind of life! However when there is effort and hard work put in to achieve something,then it becomes a habit for us to continue to do so. As for me,my parents were the ones who guided me through to save the environment.At first i was either forgetful,or became negligent about saving electricity.But now it has become a habit for me. Before i leave my house,its is a constant habit for me to switch off all power sockets so that there is no electricity running.Upon that i make sure that if i am to use the water heater, i will switch it on first,then go and brush my teeth and then i will switch it off once i am about to bath.This saves lots of electricity too as water heaters takes up lots of current. Furthermore i don't have the habit of using air-conditioner at all.I use it once in a blue moon.Perhaps once a year,if the weather is unbearably hot. And I always bring cloth bags when i go to the supermarket.Unless I am not at home and i go to the supermarket on the way.Then,it is an exception. Me and my parents we also give away old newspapers to the rag and bone man too.We also give away our old cloths if there is,to the people who comes and collects old stuff door to door. Perhaps it may a few movements which i have done to help save the environment.But small deeds do make a difference too. So everybody lets save our mother planet!!

Sad but true, only when we can all learn that one small contribution from each of us will go a long way. For instance for charities, small contributions from each person can go a long way to benefiting the organisation in the end as many 10 cents can sum up to a huge amount. Food for thought everyone?

sarahmarlena I’m in a non air-conditioned room right now, I bring a recycling bag whenever I shop for groceries, I unplug my chargers and turn off all my lights when they’re not in use, I take public transportation and try to walk most of the time and I’ve cut down on my meat intake. I also recharge my batteries and pay my bills online. I shop at thrift stores too. Hopefully all this is a good start to going green! Oh, and maybe I’ll buy a hybrid car in the future.

jade Dicaprio has always been very active in supporting such environmental issues, such as producing the documentary The 11th Hour. This is really good to see, and hope his fans would be inspired to do the same in going green!

wengkit I do share the same view that when celebrities go green, they will influence the public to go green. Celebrities are roll models to the public. Turn on the television now and you will found endless news about what celebrities are doing or involved in at this moment of time. Celebrities are role models and have the ability to influence the public on on stands and views including going green. The audiences or fans of the celebrities will in turn follow exactly on what the celebrities are going or wearing. Take an example of the movie 'Sex and the city'. After this movie is broadcasted, lots of people went to get exactly what the female actresses are wearing. This is a clear example on how the celebrities can strongly influence the public. So, it is a good sign to see celebrities going green. More people will go green and this will make the world a better place to live in. Long live mother earth!!!

venessa Paper usually can only be recycled 5-7 times. In the long run, doing assignments, quizzes or even exams is definitely more environmentally friendly. Imagine the number of trees we can save from being cut down by going online!

belverin Personally, I think doing a quiz online will be more convenient. If we do not even need the material, why would people even chop trees and use the resources? Also, recycling paper require water and other resources. Hence, it is not really environmental friendly either.

qocaly It cannot be say that using paper or doing online which is better,the answer is not absolutely.After using the paper,it could be recycle.However,the above comment said by Venassa that paper cannot be recycle forever,it only can be 5-7 times.In such a situation,we still need to cut down the tree to make paper when the previous paper cannot be use anymore.Doing online quizes using the electricity(energy).If the quizes just need a short time ti finish,which it much frugal than using paper.It sounds using electricity is better.If doing online quizes using a lot of electricity which waste more than doing on paper,so use paper is better.Both of them have advantages and disadvantages.

prodigypatrick basically that both will have pros and cons about doing it. it just depends on how we look at it. like what you mention, online will cause high usage of electricity, but using papers will means to cut down more trees. to me, online would be a much better choice, although it increasing the energy consumption, but with the technology now, we will be able to solve this problem sooner. but cutting down trees, to save it we will have to plant it back, and all of us knows that it takes years for trees to grow and we cant fasten the process. so online is better :D

firstbornunicorn That is a very interesting topic that set me thinking! I think that one really has to consider the target audience in order to choose the best medium. For example, if the quiz is targeted at youths like ourselves, probably aged 16-21 years, the better option would be online. This is as youths already spend so much time on the computer, so the electricity used up specifically to do this said quiz would be negligible when put in context, which is the few hours that most of us spend online. If let's say a youth takes 5 minutes to complete a quiz, it would be better if it is done online because it is more likely that he/she would already have the computer or laptop on, and he/she would already be doing the regular things that he/she is doing online. If the target audience, however, is the middle-aged professionals, it would be more practical to use paper because they are less likely to be online a lot and there is a higher chance that they would have to specially turn on the computer or laptop in order to do this quiz, hence resulting in a higher consumption of energy that they otherwise would not have consumed. I guess it is reasonable to say that in this time and age, more and more people are tech-savvy and are spending quite a fair bit of time online, especially the Internet. So the extra energy used up in doing online quizzes is negligible. Youths already spend a lot of time on the Internet, so asking them to do their assignments in soft copy or to submit the assignments via email will not be causing a significant spike in the use of electricity (since they would be using the computer anyway whether or not there is homework). So in this case, printing more paper would probably be wasting resources and contributing to global warming.

farisdmtm to me both have advantages and disadvantages. doing quizzes online use energy whereas doing quizzes on paper requires us to recycle and after 5-7 times of recycling, we still have to cut down trees to produce papers. doing online quizzes too often not only affect the environment but also our eye sight. for short quizzes it is acceptable to do it online but for long quizzes it is best to get done on paper, at least we can use both side of the paper.

valerietan For me, I think doing a quiz on paper would help to save the environment. Firstly, trees that have been cut down can be re-grown. Paper can likewise be recycled and reused a couple of times. We also can help cut down the usage of papers by using both sides and if we were to write or print wrongly on the paper, the paper could become rough paper for us to scribble other stuff. Doing an online quiz uses up a lot of energy as computers consume a lot of electricity. Electricity can’t be recycle or reuse. Once it is used up, it is gone forever. I agree that using paper also harms the environment, but it doesn’t do as much damage as using up a large amount of electricity. Thus, a quiz on paper would be a much better way to help save the environment.

dorkyain well i agree with you that going green might be burning our wallets. but the again, certain green products like Body Shop are abit more affordable than those u stated. people still view it as a luxury but more and more people are starting to see the need for it so they buy recyclable bags from their super markets or their favourite retail store. it depends on where you purchase your products to determine if it is a luxury or not.

khairulariffin Maybe a change in our diets would also be beneficial and helpful to saving the environment. Cut down the meat and up the veggie intake! I'm sure people are looking into ways to cheapen and better eco-friendly products and make it accessible and affordable to the general population. If not, we can still make simple changes like bringing our own reusable baskets or trolleys to supermarkets instead of using their plastic bags.

venessa We don't really have to spend money to go green. Simple ways like using paper bags instead of plastic bags, or turning off the tap when you brush your teeth etc, can do wonders in helping to save the environment. In my opinion it's not necessary to buy eco-friendly products.

yunwen It's not necessary to buy those new eco-friendly products that replaces plastic bags and etc because we are still able to reuse the large amount of plastic bags we have right now. Other than reducing, we have to reuse too!

farhana Yeap! We definitely don't have to purchase those expensive eco-friendly goods to prove that we are going green. We can start with ourselves first by practising the 3Rs dillgently because I bet most of us are still not making this attitude a habit. And there are some flea markets who actually sell eco-friendly products at a much cheaper price(: Most importantly, we got to embrace the green in us as the first step(:

janelleeelc I don't that by going green means that we necessarily have to get items that are eco-friendly. There are many ways in which we can help the environment by reusing, recycling and reducing. An example, for us students, one thing we can do is to use/buy recycled foolscap paper or use pens which have refills. This can also be considered reusing and using eco-friendly products. Of course, if we wish to buy and are able to afford the more expensive eco-friendly items then all the more we should. However, we don't have to spend a lot to help the environment. Simple measures taken can also be beneficial in some ways.
