jade Dicaprio has always been very active in supporting such environmental issues, such as producing the documentary The 11th Hour. This is really good to see, and hope his fans would be inspired to do the same in going green!

wengkit I do share the same view that when celebrities go green, they will influence the public to go green. Celebrities are roll models to the public. Turn on the television now and you will found endless news about what celebrities are doing or involved in at this moment of time. Celebrities are role models and have the ability to influence the public on on stands and views including going green. The audiences or fans of the celebrities will in turn follow exactly on what the celebrities are going or wearing. Take an example of the movie 'Sex and the city'. After this movie is broadcasted, lots of people went to get exactly what the female actresses are wearing. This is a clear example on how the celebrities can strongly influence the public. So, it is a good sign to see celebrities going green. More people will go green and this will make the world a better place to live in. Long live mother earth!!!

khairulariffin I think it would be more helpful and insightful if you provided your thoughts on this as well instead of copying and pasting the entire paragraph of the article to start a topic, without any input of your own, keshias? Regarding this article, I think its a double edged sword resulting from the falling oil prices as this means that people will have more incentives to use more fuel and therefore cause more environmental problems. Crude oil isn't an indefinite resource, it will run out with our constant and increasing usage of it. They may purchase cars, or have the mindset that they can afford to burn more fuel because of the dropping price. In the long run, this can be detrimental to the economy because of the increased use of fuel. However, I also think that people will be encouraged try to save more seeing as the price has decreased and they will want to save both money and the environment, which will definitely benefit both households and small consumers.

keshias Well, frankly speaking, I don't think it will last. Based on what we learn in Economics (the demand and supply theory), the prices will rise soon. It's just like a cycle. However, it does not mean that people can waste electricity just because it's cheaper now.

farisdmtm there are good and bad with regards to this topic. the bad part, like what khairul said is people tend to increase their usage knowing that price of crude oil is dropping. that causes more problem to the environment. the good part is people can save the extra money that they usually use to pay bills for other important needs.

keshias Social Media ! I know that some of the members from SP Environment Club went around interviewing people on their views on either the event or on environmental topics. Photos taken with the cosplay who were generating abt NEA's Operation MACE were immediately posted up on Clean & Green Singapore facebook site. Well, I had fun. I hope you do too.

fasciola89 The events are all good, but the best afterall is of course the participation of the SP students. It's comforting to know that Y-generation still do care about Earth! :)

ruskinong My personal favourite was the green band competition. The participants really made it clear that music can be made out of stuff that we have defined as useless in our daily lifestyle. Two thumbs up for all teams!

shyonshii The green band competition was actually the most fun segment I ever had. It's quite amusing to see the bands go up there to perform with enthusiasm to spread the message of saving the earth. I'm also glad that Channel 5 have covered our Earth Day! It was exciting to see a lot of various medias taking interest in our campaign!

The Green bands competition was major entertaining, though. rick the event was such a bore, i\'m thinking of ways of how to kill myself in my head. MACE by NEA was about some mozzies, which is unrelated to being environmentally conscious. i lol\'d at the ridicule sight of them in costume. what are they supposed to be, some mozzie fighters or something? if you wanna cosplay, go suntec. the Green Band cheated my feelings. i was expecting some music with singings, but we got mindless stomping, hoofing and shouting of the participants. this ain\'t what a band\'s supposed to be. the Green Band disappoint me so much and i left early cause the noise is just too unbearable, it\'s like telling me to get the fish out. Rick roll'd

xyrhs My personal favourite about SP Go Green, is the fashion show. I didn\'t know that there are things like eco-fashion and eco-friendly tee shirts etc. Also, seeing some students dressed up in green with green apples in their hands feels awesome. It\'s heartwarming to see that our generation is willing to do something to show our support, even if it meant to wear a green t-shirt, to show our support. I feel that more of such events should be held to not only educate students about going green, but also to remind them that being environmentally friendly should not be just a one day thing, but rather a daily thing, so that we could save our environment!

shaunmaniax I feel that the event itself was not fun and what was worse, I felt that the message of the event wasn't really brought across. There were a lot of things going on which really didn't show what SP was going green. Even the lights out wasn't really a lights out. The only good part of it was the car free day. It was nice to have a little fresh air, even though there were some cars there because of the event or because they were supplies for the stores in SP, if there was anything that SP should continue from that event would be the car free day, other than that, don't waste resources saying that we are going green. Because it really doesn't show.

keshias I really hope more and more companies start to do their part in corporate social responsibility and turn off their lights during Earth Hour next year! Then the event partner list will grow longer and look nicer because Singapore is doing its part :)

massk I wonder if the 1 hour turn off is during the day or night. If it is in the day then its kind of not that effective especially if you only turn off non essential lightings....hello its day time.

ruskinong @massk: We turn off the lights during 8.30pm to 9.30pm local time on 27 March. So in a way, it was a new way of spending an hour in SP; total darkness!

christelyay I think switching off the lights for one hour was SP\'s act of support for the green movement and to show that we were taking a stand. But,through all these campaigns and activities, how many students will actually make an effort to reduce carbon footprints and care for the enviroment? Is this just mindless campaigning?

khad I agree, it will look really beautiful when the lights of the buildings go off one by one. And if it works, we could actually do it more than just a day in a year! I mean, afterall, when there is a big event or festivals like NDP etc, they would actually used more electricity than how much we saved for that one little pathetic \'earth hour\'! It would just be pointless, but i have to agree though the small step is influential.
